Book Review

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library

What better way to spend summer holidays than to sit with a cold glass of water melon juice, a plate of mangoes and a nice book? My summer vacations of 2019 gave me all these luxuries and the book I read was called “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library”. Not a very thick book – just about 300 pages, it is written by ‘Chris Grabenstein’. The book was published in 2013 by ‘Penguin Random House LLC’.

No review is complete without telling you a little about the plot. So here is a small peek into the plot.

Luigi Lemoncello, the world’s most famous gamemaker has made the town’s new library and selected twelve children to be the first visitors to this fantastic library. Kyle, the protaginist and some of his friends are choosen to visit the library and spend a night there. They have a good time there, but the next morning on waking up, to their utter shock and dismay, they find that they are trapped in the library. There seems no escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. They have to somehow escape and figure out a way before their time runs out.

The interesting question that immediately arose in my mind was – was there a purpose in choosing Kyle and his friends for the visit to the library? Well. You have to read to find out.

The main characters in the book are Kyle, and other good guys - his brothers Mike and Curtis, his parents, his friends Sierra, Akimi, Miguel and Andrew while the bad guys - his enemies are Charles and the famous gamemaker Mr. Lemoncello.

There is a great learning from the book though it has not been given out as such. I learnt that working together and teamwork makes every work easier. The book is both captivating and enjoyable. There is an extra puzzle in the book as a bonus. A clue has been given in the end and there were lots of hints in the story for solving it, but I wasn’t able to solve it!

I recommend this book for readers of grades 4-7. There are three other books in this series so if you read this book and like it, the next book in the series is ‘Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics’.

I give this book 4 stars out of 5 stars.
